Ashley River State Scenic Corridor at Middleton Place

The Inn at Middleton Place serves as our departure point for paddling the historic upper Ashley River and its winding brackish water creeks. Situated in the middle of a 22 mile stretch that represents the lowcountrys only State Scenic River Corridor, this paddle provides a glimpse into the past that makes this river so significant to Charleston's history. Our naturalist guides will provide interpretation about the diverse flora and fauna, and rich cultural history of the Ashley river. A regular highlight of the tour are the American Alligators that make thier home on the river, but dont worry they are not interested in kayaks! Both tandem and single kayaks are available to insure a comfortable paddling experience for all levels of paddlers. The tour will meet at the lodge at the Middleton Inn. Children must be accompanied by an adult in a tandem kayak. Reservations are required. Approximate tour time is 2 hours. Cost starts at $45pp. Offered Year Round.

Kayak Rental at Middleton Place

Head out and explore the Ashley river at Middleton Place at your own pace. Enjoy great views of the terraced landscape of Middleton and find secluded creeks to meander in search of an intimate wildlife viewing experience. Our guide will provide you with all the equipment, basic paddling instruction, and a detailed safety briefing before you depart on your own. Extremely stable tandem kayaks are used for our rentals. (If you have previous paddling and self rescue experience, single kayaks may be available at our guides discretion.) Advance Reservations Required ( we will attempt to service day of request when possible) Rentals may not always be available. Rentals include all safey gear and kayaks for up to 2 hours. Call to check for availability. $20 per person for Tandem $30 for single.

Cypress Swamp Kayaking at Middleton Place

The 2011 swamp paddling season is almost here! We just need a little more rainfall to get the water levels up and we will be set to go. February through the April is the typical season for exploring the bottomland swamps that are so closley connected to the lore and mystery of the South Carolina lowcountry. This guided trip wanders through the maze of towering cypress and tupelo trees that give you the feeling of stepping back in time. Stable hybrid tandem (2 person) kayaks will serve as your vessel for exploring the vast 1,100 acre wilderness area. Barred Owls, Red-shouldered hawks, otters, wood ducks, wild turkeys, and a variety of woodpeckers are just a few of the species that make thier home here. We are now accepting reservations beginning February 15th-April 30th 2011. Being a limited paddling window and small group sizes, spots fill up quick, so pre-book your trip for 2011 season. Trips will meet at Middleton Inn registration building before the short shuttle to swamp site. Allow for 3 hour time commitment. On water time is between 1.5-2 hours depending on pace. typical tour times 10am-1pm or 1pm-4pm - $62pp
